Biography

Makiko Imato (M.Ost) is a registered osteopath and massage therapist originally from Japan, with extensive experience in both Japan and the UK. She began her career in 2000 at some of Japan’s most prestigious hotels and spas, where she honed a diverse range of massage techniques and cultivated a deep passion for the musculoskeletal system.Determined to better understand the body and its capacity to heal after witnessing how pain affected her clients’ wellbeing, she relocated to London to study at the renowned British School of Osteopathy—Europe’s oldest and most esteemed osteopathic institution—earning her master’s degree in 2011.Following her qualification, Makiko brought her expertise to several of London’s most exclusive wellness destinations, including KX Health & Fitness Club, the South Kensington Club, and Grace Belgravia. Drawing from this rich experience, she crafted her signature Alignment Massage—a bespoke method designed to restore balance, enhance posture, and optimise the body’s natural function.Today, Makiko works independently, welcoming clients at the ANKHA Clinic in Chelsea, London, as well as through home visits and online sessions via Zoom. She is dedicated to helping each individual achieve lasting alignment, reduced strain, and effortless, graceful movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer home visits?

Yes, bespoke home visits are available for your convenience. For Alignment Massage, clients are kindly asked to provide a massage table, while Postural Training requires no special equipment. Please note that travel fees apply and vary by location. Makiko can also travel longer distances, including outside London or occasionally abroad, by special arrangement.

Do you offer treatment packages?

Yes, massage treatment packages are available in sets of 5 sessions, valid for 6 months:

60 minutes · £725
90 minutes · £950

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients feel noticeable improvement after the first session, while longer-lasting changes (such as improved posture, freer movement, and reduced tension) develop over time. Beginning with a few sessions allows these benefits to take hold, after which clients may choose a package to continue their progress.

How should I prepare for my first session?

Alignment Massage is generally oil-based, with clients typically undressing to their underwear, though it can be performed through clothing if preferred. For Postural Training, comfortable clothing that allows free movement is recommended. If you are allergic or sensitive to certain oils, or have any health restrictions, contraindications, or considerations—such as pregnancy, recent surgery, or chronic conditions—please provide this information in advance so that the session can be prepared safely and tailored to your needs.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations or rescheduling require at least 24 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less notice may be charged in full. Please note, packages are refundable only in exceptional circumstances. In such cases, sessions already used are charged at the standard single-session rate, and the remaining balance refunded.

Which forms of payment do you accept?

All major debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, cash, and bank transfers are accepted.

Are any of the treatments painful?

Pressure is always adapted to your needs. At times you may feel some intensity, but this will stay within a range that is described as “good pain”—a release that feels right. Your comfort and safety are the priority.

How will I feel after a session?

You may feel lighter, more relaxed, or more aware of your posture and breathing. Subtle changes will often continue to unfold over the next few hours or days. It’s also normal to feel a little tired or achy as your body adjusts, which usually resolves quickly. During Alignment Massage optional cupping may be used, which can sometimes leave temporary marks for a few days after treatment.Strenuous activity should generally be avoided immediately after a massage session, as relaxed muscles may be more susceptible to injury.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes—treat someone to the experience of calm, alignment, and relaxation!

About Alignment Bodywork

Overview

Alignment Bodywork is a holistic discipline that combines manual therapies to promote both your physical and emotional well-being. The practice eases built-up strain and encourages mindfulness amid the demands of modern life, when poised alignment is all too easily lost. The body is a unified system with an innate capacity to rejuvinate itself—through her work, Makiko creates the conditions for this potential to flourish.

Philosophy

Rooted in osteopathic principles, Alignment Bodywork views body, breath, and mind as interconnected. Tightness in one area often stems from repetitive or imbalanced habits elsewhere, which is why treatment addresses the whole system rather than isolated symptoms. Even the subtlest shifts in posture and movement can have positive ripple effects on one’s breathing, organ function, mood, and mental clarity.

Approach

Alignment Bodywork operates through individually tailored structure and attunement, using two complementary pathways:Alignment Massage incorporates osteo-philosophical techniques and myofascial release to reset the body’s inherent flow.Postural Training uses precise sequences to enhance physical comfort and nurture the body’s natural carriage, which can be disrupted by long hours at a desk or accumulated stress.

Benefits

With Alignment Bodywork, tension is reduced and motion becomes more fluid, fostering lasting strength, flexibility, and refined body awareness. Clients develop a poised posture with intentional movement—benefits that endure long after each session.
